Fluid Mixing and Leakage: How to Quickly Locate the Faulty Plate

Aug 13, 2026 127 views ~8 min read Technical Knowledge
The two media should never meet; once mixed, product quality and safety are both compromised. This article covers the leak localization method for detachable plate heat exchangers: from visual inspection, pressure-holding test, dye/tracer test, to single-plate isolation, step by step locking down which plate is leaking.

I. The Harm of Fluid Mixing

Detachable plate heat exchangers rely on gaskets to separate the two fluids. Aging gaskets, plate cracks, and insufficient clamping force can all cause fluid mixing: the cold side mixes with the hot fluid (abnormally high temperature), or the process side contaminates the product. Timely detection limits losses; delay may ruin a batch of material.

II. Four-Step Localization Method

  • 1. Visual inspection: Remove the cover and look for leakage traces in the flow-guide zone, check whether the gasket is extruded;
  • 2. Pressure-holding test: Pressurize one side (at part of the design pressure), observe whether the other side builds pressure;
  • 3. Tracer test: Add a dye or tracer gas to one side, detect on the other side, quickly lock the channel;
  • 4. Single-plate isolation: When a plate is suspected, disassemble or replace in pairs for testing, narrowing the range.

III. Common Root Causes

Root causeManifestationTreatment
Gasket aging/misinstalledLeak along the seal lineReplace gasket, reinstall
Uneven clamping forceEdge fluid mixingRetighten by torque
Plate pitting/crackLocal perforationReplace plate
Foreign object jammedSeal face cannot compressClean then reinstall

IV. Prevention

  • Replace gaskets regularly (by material life, not only after leaking);
  • When restarting after shutdown, pressurize gradually per procedure to avoid shock;
  • When the medium contains particles/chloride ions, select corresponding material and gasket.
The core of fluid-mixing localization in one sentence: first zone, then isolate, finally replace parts—do not tear down the whole unit at once.
